DELAYED TEETHING IN CHILDREN AGED ONE YEAR AND OLDER

Most infants have 8 primary teeth, including the front incisors, at the beginning of second year of their life, although the delayed eruption of teeth in children is quite often. This is not pathological, but hereditary. Even if a child is to have no teeth at all, which occurs in nearly one child per two thousand), by the 3rd year, or maximum by the 5th, all the temporary teeth erupt. And if some of the teeth are not placed correctly, the child should be seen to the orthodontist. The specialist will determine the cause of this anomaly and assign the appropriate treatment for the permanent teeth to appear in time and in full amount.

In most of the children the first teeth begin to erupt at 5-7 months of age. Although the norm is considered to be three months, and 9-10 months, there is nothing wrong even if the child at birth has a few teeth. It is not abnormal either if the delayed eruption of teeth occurs at about a year, and even later. Such situation is especially common in prematurely born children. However, if the parents are concerned about this situation, they should make an appointment sign with the dentist or podiatrist for a consultation or even for supervision during the teething period.

As the parents are supposed to regularly cleanse and massage the infant’s gums with a special nozzle or a moistened gauze pad on a finger, the changes in the gums should be immediately noticed: the gums swell and become slightly red. Although quite often since the moment of swelling one or even one and a half months pass before the first tooth erupts, the so-called "eruption cyst", a bump with the clear liquid of bluish color, appears immediately prior to the tooth eruption. Later, the cyst resolves after the teething and does not require any treatment. Directly during the eruption of the teeth the gums itch, and salivation becomes heavy. The dentist’s supervision may be needed to differentiate the swelling of the gums when teething and stomatitis manifestations. To ensure that the germ is in its place, it is enough to knock lightly on the gums with a coffee spoon and listen for a slight knock.

Temperature rises in children are more typical during the eruption of molars and are rarely experienced by those under a year of age. In general, the eruption of the molars (molar) teeth takes longer time and is more painful and unpleasant for the child because of the large area of the tooth. Certain complications and abnormal reactions can be in this period that should not be confused with the teething reactions.
